Squeeking Belt

Hello fellow Savage riders,
The belt drive on my Savage makes a squeeking noise. I have checked the rear wheel alignment and the belt tension and they are both perfect.
On a previous posting, I have seen Harley Davidson belt dressing recommended. My local Harley dealer sells it, but it's £12.99 (which is about US$19.50).
My friends call me Scrooge. I think I'm thrifty. Either way, I'm looking for ways to avoid spending this money - I'd sooner buy beer and petrol (gasoline in USA). £12.99 = 16 cans of beer.
I used a very thin coat of liquid soap (the sort of soap women in the past used to wash plates before they all got dishwashing machines). I put the soap just on the edges of the belt and it cured the squeeking.
The questions are:
1. Will the soap damage the belt in any way? (It's mild to hands and gives you fairy soft skin!!!).
2. Have any of you tried any other lubricants to stop the belt squeek?
3. Will it be cheaper in the long run to buy the Harley belt dressing?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Happy Savage riding, even the squeeky ones.
